In order to fulfill her ambition of becoming an actress, she moved in New York to try her chances in the film industry. She was a chef at the restaurant in New York, and appeared in Broadway productions. She played a minor role in the film "Felicity" (where it was that she also met Scott Foley). She got her big break in the action thriller "Alias." Her first leading role was the widely praised love story "13 Going on 30." The film starred her as an teen who was stuck in the body of the 30-year-old. Garner decided to choose Gary Winick to direct the film; they continued to look for other films together up until the time of his passing away in the year 2011. Garner has been designated as an artist ambassador by Save the Children U.S.A. for 2009, played an integral role in the organization. Alongside encouraging early education, literacy, and nutrition on a national level, Garner's role is also to promote national literacy. Garner has been on this board of trustees since 2014. Garner promotes early childhood education. In her role as an ambassador for the organization, Garner regularly meets with families who are part of the organization's Early Steps to School Success program.
